Christchurch Airport’s Novotel Opening Delayed Again

$80m, 200-key Novotel delays opening

Key Points:

  • Originally this was supposed to open in late 2017

  • Novotel Hotel had been taking bookings from 1 November

  • Accor unable to confirm opening date

Christchurch Airport’s new Novotel Hotel had been taking bookings from November 1st but guests have been redirected to other hotels after another opening delay.

Originally this was supposed to open in late 2017. Online reservation sites are now taking bookings for the hotel from December 2nd but Accor was unable to confirm that as an opening date.

Christchurch Airport said they have not been advised of an opening date but said contractor Fletcher Building was working through the final certification process.

The airport has invested $80 million in the 200 bed hotel, being built by Fletcher on airport land next to the international terminal. It has not been a good past few years or past month for Fletcher as they are the ones building SkyCity Convention Centre which just went up in flames after being delayed many years. The current delays by Fletcher have been blamed on receiving the wrong steel and weather damage to bathroom pods awaiting installation and serious damage to the hotel from a water leak.
