Large Number Of Hotels Slated For Development Across Australia

Despite country wide declines in hotel trading, there remains a large number of hotel developments planned over the next five years

Despite RevPAR falling in nearly every Australian capital city over the past year, the number of hotels slated for development remains at a record highs.


A significant number of hotels slated for development over the next five years will be high end luxury product, in what appears to be an effort to capitalise on Chinese tourism.


Six new 6-star hotels totaling 1,642-keys are set to open before the end of 2020, with two in Melbourne, and one each in Adelaide, Gold Coast, Perth and Sydney. A total of 86 hotels classed as 5 or 6-star are in the development pipeline running through to December 2024, accounting for 23,128-keys.


Of the high end product offerings, Melbourne has 22 hotels with 5,120-keys in the pipeline, while Gold Coast leads by rooms count with 5,500-keys across 11 sites.
