STR has released March 2020 data, providing the first true indications of how the accommodation sector has fared in the early stages of Covid-19.

YTD STR numbers for March 2020 indicate the following occupancy declines YOY:

  • Sydney: -44.4% to 48.5%

  • Melbourne: -44.4% to 47.7%

  • Brisbane: -40.8% to 41.7%

  • Perth: -34.6% to 48.8%

  • Darwin: -29.2% to 33.5%

  • Cairns: -37.9%to 36%

STR Regional Manager Pacific, Matthew Burke, said performance across the region was similar across the world as demand disappeared to mitigate the spread of Covid-19. “Performance in the month of March progressively deteriorated as the month transpired but it wasn’t until the 14th and then again on the 23rd that it completely fell away with the government restrictions enacted. “There has been a small temporary bounce in April with the quarantine of returning travellers but has also seen hotels elect to close during this period.”
